Share your story with us. Here's a story from a teacher who used this book to discuss her cancer with her students.
I found I had breast cancer in November of 2007. I had surgery in December of 2007 and started chemo in January 2008. I continued to teach my elementary class, but took off 4 days every 3 weeks when I had my treatment. I lost my hair by mid February of 2008. The class at that time knew about my cancer and my treatments.
When I started the next school year I did not tell my class about having cancer as I was done with the big treatments, but still had a weekly treatment of Herceptin that did not make me feel so bad.
By February 2009 my hair had grown back, but I was still wearing my wig to school. I was talking to a group of teachers at lunch one day and told them my hair was getting longer and I was thinking of coming back after Easter break without my wig. I wasn't sure what to do. I prayed about what I should do. A few weeks later one of the first grade teachers said she had a student bring in a book she read to her class and she thought if might help me. The book she gave me was "Clarabelle the Cat", I felt this was the answer to my prayers. Before we went home for Easter break I read the book to my class and we discussed it.
After Easter I went to school without my wig. Several students said they liked my haircut. I asked them if they remembered the story Clarabelle the Cat. Most of them did, so I told them how I had had cancer but was better now and how I lost my hair but it grew back. I really believe the book helped the students to understand.
